The cause of bearing failure


In the case of bearing failure, we summarize some of the reasons that may cause bearing failure based on some conditions, mainly for the following reasons.

Bearing metamorphic layer formed by grinding force

During the grinding process, the surface layer of the workpiece will be subjected to the cutting force, compressive force and friction of the grinding wheel. In particular, the latter two functions to form a plastic deformation layer and a work hardened layer having a strong directivity on the surface layer of the workpiece. These metamorphic layers necessarily affect the change in the residual stress of the surface layer.

(1) Cold plastic deformation layer

In the grinding process, each time the abrasive grains are equivalent to one cutting edge. However, in many cases, the rake angle of the cutting edge is a negative value. In addition to the cutting action, the abrasive grain is subjected to the pressing action (the effect of the plough), leaving a significant plastic deformation layer on the surface of the workpiece. The degree of deformation of such a deformed layer will increase as the grinding wheel is blunt and the amount of grinding feed increases.

(2) thermoplastic deformation (or high temperature deformation) layer

The instantaneous temperature of the grinding heat on the working surface causes the elastic limit of the surface layer of the workpiece to drop sharply at a certain depth, even to the extent that the elasticity disappears. At this time, under the action of the grinding force, especially the compressive force and the frictional force, the free stretching of the working surface layer is restricted by the base metal, and the surface is compressed (more plowed), causing plastic deformation in the surface layer. The high temperature plastic deformation increases with the increase of the surface temperature of the workpiece under the condition that the grinding process is constant.

(3) Work hardened layer

It is sometimes found by the microhardness method and the metallographic method that the hardness of the surface layer is increased due to the processing deformation.

In addition to the grinding process, the surface decarburization layer caused by casting and heat treatment heating, if not completely removed in the subsequent processing, remains on the surface of the workpiece will also cause surface softening and deterioration, leading to early failure of the bearing.
